File

I am still working on my file cabinets at school. I have one more to go and I will be finished on my main files at the circulation desk. This includes most all my files since I do not have an office. My other file cabinets are another thing - but I won't get to them this year.
What Have I done with my files? First thing that was done was , I had hanging file frames put in. Then I can do a section at a time and put folders into hanging files .

Friday!

It is the day before Halloween. We have a parade and pumpkin painters prizes announced . School will be a zoo today . Good thing it is only half a day for students. We have staff development the rest of the day.
So far I am doing good on my files- Two drawers completed. Another almost part way done. I have been doing just a little every day- 15 minutes is allotted time, but on some days I do even spend that much time.

Files

Yes, I am still working slowly but surely on my file cabinets. It 's not how quickly I get done , it is how efficiently it is organized. The purpose is to be able to find what I need and have at the tip of my fingers. I have one file drawer almost complete. When it is finished I will probably label the file: Class Work sheets, author studies. This way I can quickly know what is in there. Then I will proceed to another drawer.
Happy Organizing!!

Hanging out

We are hanging out at Borders. Just another way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. This was a three meeting week so I didn't spend to much time on straightening my files But there is always next week. My total time was about maybe an hour so I did get some of my files straightened out. And lots thown away!!! (I found so many duplicate papers and then I got rid of all the duplicates! Talk to you on Monday!

Monday- File cabinets

I"s another week at school! Working on organizing files this year at my circulation desk( which is also on only desk). Do you have duplicate files? I found that in one draw alone I had several files in several places with the same name. Obviously I will take each one and see what is in each one , consolidate and and then eliminate.
Why am I doing this? Well for one reason , it makes things easier to find. Second
reason, I like orderly files. When I need something I don't want to spend extra minutes tracking down two files. So I will take just maybe 10 minutes today and I will work on one drawer,

Get Back to work!

Well, School is now well underway and I need to get back to writing. Let me remind all the school librarians: if you are required to keep lesson plans and write out formal plans, don't do what I did.
Start them right when you need them and add to them as you go. Right Now I am currently playing catch up because I did not start with at the beginning of school. I will get caught up but it is taking all my focus to work on it and get it done.
Started a new reading incentive program today- Fall into Books! Students will read and fill out apples and pumpkins to decorate outside the library. Then we will have a reading party right before Thanksgiving!

June 1st

Yes we are on to the count down! Start your engines and get that inventory done! I'm still reading and reading and reading. But by the 15th, I hope to have most of that done and that is when I start scanning!! Inventory, paper work, and keeping the kids amused is a little bit much. But some how June is here and will be gone before we know it. Keep breathing and believing that yes you will get it all done. Write down exactly what it is you need to accomplish and work toward those goals.

Summer??

I guess I was wrong on the summer part- rainy rainy cool! Still slowly reading reading reading. Also I am working on my budget- who says they cant' wait til the end of school? I have so much to do. So I am focusing on what is most important and working each day on what needs to be done. And I am not spending time on worrying will it get done because some how If I work and focus it always gets done, even If I don't have help. So focus and work and figure out what you want to accomplish . Work towards those goals.

Summer is here!

Summer is here- okay not officially but in reality I think most of our cold days are over. ( Except for maybe tomorrow) I hope you enjoyed your day. Are you ready to work tomorrow? No, I am not either but I must buckle down and get reading my shelves along with all the other thing Ineed to do before the end of the year.
One thing I do is to mark each shelf with a paper so that I will remember to write down what I have done. This also gives me motivation to keep going!

It's May!

Yes I know that I have been slacking on this blog- caught the stomach flu and was out of commission. What fun ! (Not Really) So it's May, are you reading your shelves? You should be! Do it now and do it correctly . When you get to inventory then you will have a much better time!

Busy Week

I 've had a busy week last week . This one proves to be also about the same! My workshop was great- but now back to Chase! I think the fire drill walk is today! More later!

How do your patrons check out their books? If you are public then obviously the patrons bring in their cards. If you are in a school ,you might have a variety of options. High School might have cards- or you might just type in their last name. Or you might have them listed by class and on a Rolodex where you can just flip to the class and zap their last name. Some elementary's use the notebook method where by each class is listed with students bar code and you can just wand over that. My system is a card system. As each class come to the library, I take out their class library cards. When it is check out time, the cards come out and the student gets there card before approaching the circulation desk.

Monday, April 20, 2009

Too cold out today! Get ready for a new week. I hope you are satisfied with the circulation desk area. Have you been clearing and organizing? If you have all of your items ready then you will be ready for anything.
When I go in to work this morning, I have everything ready for my mornings work. I do this at the end of each day- I stamp cards, and check my plan book. Then I pile up the materials I need for each class. I have my objectives written on my flip chart. This afternoon I will write out the three more objectives that I need for tomorrow. Then they are done for the week.

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Let's get right back into the swing of things at your library. How is your circulation desk? Is everything organized?? Straightened ? Clean? do you know where everything is? If you don't and you have to search for things then that takes time away from productive work.
So look hard today and see if there is something to straighten out / move. Make your desk work for you as if it were a human assistant( even if you have one) Make sure that you are ready every morning with the supplies you need at your circulation desk. Maybe at the end of the day you can stamp date dues( if you use them) , put everything in order. ( a good task to do at the end of the day- especially if you are a morning person. then you should do the more challenging tasks in the morning! Ah- another topic to think about! See you Friday!

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Its Wednesday and I have spent my time off doing lots of different things. But I have been going through papers, recipes, and clothes that I just don't need. I have started a bag for the consignment shop of clothes that I am sure I will not wear any more. I even added a few other items from the house that will go in my bag. Here is my motto- if you are not using it- let someone else use it.
Still to cold to get outside so I will organize, read, and bake.

Monday, April 6, 2009

Start of a new week- last week went by in a blur and I didn't post past Monday!!
Any way on my week off, I will be cleaning and organizing around the house. Lots of papers that can be deep sixed- when I looked at them and determine I really do not need them, I just throw then in the paper recycle bin. ( don't fill up your garbage with paper!!).
Hope to get a lot done this week and remove a lot of items that I do not need.

Monday, March 30, 2009

Happy Monday! Is it sill raining?? Good day to do some more organizing! How is your cicr desk coming along? do you have everything you and your patrons need to do check out? do you have supplies close to do requests and holds? It is neat and clean? Every time you organize and clean up you will feel better about the space . It will be easier to get your work done. Keep working- (I'll check in on Wednesday!

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

It's to cold out to be spring! How are you doing on your circulation desk? Do you have all your supplies right at hand where you need them? What about supplies to request holds? Paper, Pencils, pens, notebook? Every system is different-I write down each requested book ( check it out when you are going to order new books) . I also write down each one that I loan. Buy the end of this month, your goal is to have all your supplies that you use regularly within close range and organized at you Circ. desk.
I am going to training today about new updates to our system. So keeping up with all the newest helps on your circ. program is also a must. Whatever system you use, use all the options to make your life easier and your work more efficient.

Monday, March 23, 2009

Well , its cold out today! if you are still working on your circulation, check out your supplies. Do you have pencils/pens for your students / patrons to use? Sharpen them up and put them in an attractive holder . What else do you need at your circulation desk? Spend a litttle time thinking about what else you need to have at your circulation desk , and if it is there right now, or do you have to go searching for it when you need it. Happy Monday!

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

On my circulation desk , I keep a small wicker basket. In it is has my daily circulation supplies. Date due slips which are stamped get taken out and set right next to the basket. Inside the basket is the stamp and some extra cards. When book check out occurs , you can quickly take out the card in the back of the book and throw it into the basket. You have supplies ready if you need to type more date due cards.

Monday, March 16, 2009

Last week went by in a blur and I realized on Saturday- Wow- Didn't blog past Monday! How did that happen? How is your circulation area? Did you straighten / organize. I realized that I didn't need to keep the students "saved " books on prime counter space , so I moved them to the check in cart with a sign. This way I now have more room on the desk itself. Just by doing that one thing I have more room on the desk. And it looks better, also seems more organized. I am continuing on this short week to think of ways that I can move/ organize my circulation. Remember , It all doesnt have to happen over night. Slow and steady wins the race.

Your Desk

This week we will start at the library one place where everyone spends a lot of time, the circulation desk! Take 15 minutes the first day you can , and see where you can be better organized and more efficient. Do you have pencils/ pens handy both for your use and your assistant if you have one and for your students/patrons? Get some sharpened and ready. Make a can that people can grab if they need too. Look at your calendar. Do you have one? Is it up to date? Clean it off so you can see and write or pencil important dates/ tasks for you to remember. The calendar is one of the most important things for you to use in your quest in being organized and efficient!

Thursday, March 5, 2009

Are you working on your bookshelves? I have been at a workshop at SC BOCES on history, which is very interesting. Makes me want to write an historical piece, which I have to simmer in my mind awhile. ( I know that is totally unrelated to being organized but I am being consumed by this and it is taking up all my thoughts.)
Keep working on your book shelves. My are pretty up to date. My husband is another one of those organizing people , so together we make a good team. If you are still at home and working on your book shelves, think about next week. What spot should you organize??

Monday, March 2, 2009

Snow Day!! Good day to organize at home! What really needs to be organized?Your book shelf? Take out the books and dust the shelves. How should you place them back? It's totally up to you. Many home libraries are organized by types of books- fiction can be organized by genres or by author. Non-fiction can be done by subject areas- like putting all your cookbooks together or by the type of cooking- baking, stir frying, roasting, . Basically, its what you want- but make it easy on your self so you can find a book quickly! In the library, we always try to organize so the item can be found.

It's Friday !! Soon to be raining, I think. I'm off to work in a few minutes. Start your day today thinking about where you really need to be organized. What is your worst spot? How can you fix it?
Don't do anything about organizing today. Just think about which area would be most helpful to you to be organized and straighten. Next week, we're off to our first organizing project! Have a great Weekend!!

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

Cold out today, but wait for the rain/sleet!! Begin to think about how you would like to be more organized. What areas are you interested in being more organized in?? Next week, I will start you on your first organizing "project" so stay tuned.

2/18/09

Well, the snow is coming again this afternoon. It's time to scurry out to get your bread and milk!! This site will help librarians be organized and get tasks done on a regular basis. Having been a school librarian for 31 years ( throw in there a children's librarian at a public library for 2 years,) I know what is like to try to get things done along with having classes and book check out's and holding special programs. So what I will be doing is giving tips and recommendations for getting things organized. After you are organized then you can start to really get tasks done.

This is the site where you will see tips on how to be organized in your library!
