Building better libraries- career resources

Libraries both school and public provide valuable resources for career research and job services, At the school level, many middle and high school have career resources, both print and digital,

There are also countless websites to assist students in determining what career they might  be interesting in There are also book resources oh specific resources ,  Several teachers did  career research  with students . One year when the goal was thinking about careers, our administrator promoted the career resources  in the morning announcements.

On our website we had a career section that had career surveys ( to help students figure out what they would like to do and what they would be good at doing) We also had databases and websites  that highlighted careers and what was necessary to enter in the career.

Why students need a librarian

If you need to defend your position there are lots of resources that you will find. But much of why students need librarians is basic , so here a few to think about and add to your list.
   1) Librarians provide materials matched to student learning styles and abilities.  There are print, on line and audio resources. Many of the online and audio can be adapted to student levels. Some can provide sources that can be read aloud to students,

  2) The library website  ( provided & maintained by librarians) offers 24/7 access to the online catalog and electronic resources, databases and lists of curated sites  for specific projects.

 3) The Librarian and the library provides information that is carefully selected and  appropriate for students learning needs and projects.

Use these as needed. In future posts , I 'll add a few more reasons why students need a library and a librarian.

Update your library web page!

How often do you update your library page? What exactly should you update?

1.If you do a lot of collaboration with teachers and student then you need to do quite a bit. Whenever you work with students, try to add/ edit a livebinder or a curated list of sites for them to use.

2, Update links/ websites for students to use in projects - check links to be sure they are working and up to date.( eliminate old ones and look for new ones)

 3. Additional resources- add links for staff to use for their information , or teaching resources

 4. Add your newsletter if you do one.

 5. Add Book recommendations ( what the librarian is reading - or have kids do this with reviews

 6. Information about what is happening at the library

 7. Publicize new resources

 8. Add links for student recommendations   to books if you have a section on that.

Library Calendar of classes and activiites.

I just finished this posting my library calendar on the school library's website.   It was there before  but not up to date or very visible to the staff. What I did was place the link to the calendar in the middle of the main page.

On the calendar, I have posted the classes that will be in the library for that week. This way  teacher can look at the calendar and see if the library is open for students to  come and  check out books or be sent to do computer work or research.   Also teachers can look at it and plan  when to bring students or have students work on projects.

Many times during the course of the week, I am into classrooms and or in the lab helping students do research  so this is also helpful to know if I am there or not. My assistant is not always there , so I may find a way to indicate that information.

I then sent a mass email to staff and told them about where the link was to the calendar. I am hoping this will also serve as a reminder  that they can reserve the library and it resources for their classwork.

Essentials for School Library Website

If  you have a school library website ( hopefully linked to your school's website) there are a couple of items you should  have .   First of all , figure out the purpose of your site/ What are you trying to do by having the site?  When you have figured that out  it will help you determine what you want to put up on the site

To get started here is a list of what   is on most school library sites:
  1) With the focus on teaching and learning, there could be a blog or wiki with student ideas and comments about books and what they are learning ( both in the library and at their classes). There could also be slide shows, or pod casts  that showcase student learning and reading.
Anything thing like promotes student participation, especially blogs or Wiki's . Students love to contribute their thoughts and ideas,

2)  To drive more students and parents to your library site, you could also post  current student projects . This will have  many students looking at your site to see what they or their friends have posted,

3) Resources for your audience!!  Most important!! you should have your catalog ( goes without saying) Then your best data bases, and links to most used sites that have the most reliable information .    You may also want some links to best sellers, new books, and reviews by students to help students find out new books to read,

4) Resources for teachers!  websites and databases, services your library provides.  if you are having  workshops or staff development  you could also put an invite here. How about great Web2.0 tools that teachers could use and an offer to help?

5) Photos , or slide shows  of what is going on in  your library. Pictures of special evetns, reading programs,  and other activities that go on in the library.
